One in Seven To Live in Virtual Reality
Posted August 12th, 2010 | in Lead Story, Virtual Worlds | No Comments »Science fiction often shows us images of perfect virtual reality (VR); simulations that are indistinguishable from reality where anything we desire can be created, felt and experienced. We’re a long way from that and personally I doubt we’ll ever get there.
But what if we did? What if a near-ideal virtual reality did exist? Would we want to move in? Or would we still want to retain contact with the “real” world?
That was the question the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies (IEET) asked its readers. The results show an interesting picture.
Most popular response was an even split between real and virtual. However a whopping 14% – that’s one in seven – said they’d spend their entire life in the virtual world and never come out!
Reality’s clearly doing something wrong.
