Teen website Seventeen.com has launched a new feature called a Virtual Dressing Room. This uses augmented reality (AR) to allow website visitors to virtually “try on” clothing via their webcam.
The system, developed by Metaio, allows users to upload a photo of themselves then add clothing in a variety of styles and sizes. When they find a look they like they can go directly to JCPenney to buy online. You can see how it works by watching the video below.
The augmented reality aspect is really pretty basic; it just overlays a flat image of the clothes on the image of the user. There’s no facility for looking round from different angles or trying different poses. However it is at least a step towards truly interactive online fashion shopping.
