Experience The (Augmented) Enterprise
Posted June 1st, 2009 | in Augmented Reality, Lead Story | No Comments »I’m a little late discovering this, but it’s still worth sharing. If you’re a Star Trek fan then it’s must: an augmented “orientation tour” of the USS Enterprise!
Paramount Pictures and Total Immersion have joined together to create the augmented reality Enterprise tour. Visitors will “be given the opportunity to take an extensive five minute tour of the Enterprise, including testing the ship’s weapons systems, impulse engines and warp drive”
As with most web based augmented reality apps, Experience the Enterprise requires the user to print out a special page – in this case a version of the movie poster – and hold it in front of the webcam. The computer then uses an ActiveX plugin to generate a 3d image of the starship Enterprise with which the user can interact. You can even fire phasers and go to warp speed.
It certainly beats the traditional movie trailer.
