The OMC is now up to 20 grids --

http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2010/10/multi-grid-currencies-grow-in-opensim/

You can already use OMC to go shopping on multiple grids -- whenever you're on an OMC-enabled region, your balance will show up in the top right corner of your viewer.

You can start out on your home grid (it doesn't have to be OMC-enabled), teleport via hypergrid to an OMC-enabled grid, buy stuff, teleport home, and put your purchases down on your home grid.

The main competitor currently is the G$, currently used on about half as many grids. The two currencies are not incompatible -- a buyer can have accounts with both, and a vendor can accept either or both as payments. It's a little like Visa and Mastercard. :-)

Both have a secondary security step, in which the buyer gets a Web confirmation page pop up before finalizing transactions. The reason is that Web browsers have encrypted SSL security, but OpenSim doesn't yet offer that. The extra step is a slight inconvenience, but will go away once OpenSim is able to implement its own version of SSL encryption.

I just can't wait for this. If I can afford it when it comes out, this will probably get me to buy a cell phone/service again. And very good news that it will be on multiple platforms! If Metaio goes through with this, they could find themselves at the top of the cell phone apps market. Lets just hope it doesn't become vaporware.
How awesome will it be to leave digital stuff everywhere you go? lol I'd SOOO over-use this stuff.
Ever since I heard about Layar, I wanted that-with community features, and 3D objects.

I also hope this allows people some form of access, without a mobile device. via the internet/laptop/pc and manual location entering. If I can sit at my PC, and post an object on my house location, or on a nearby street, that would make this even more incredible! (I'd imagine some form of google-maps style interface would allow for non-mobile access, but who knows.)

Hopefully Metaio will give us more information soon.

Thanks so much for the attention :-) A small note, Pluff's website has moved to just http://dihughes.com/pluff. Sorry about that, thought we needed a revamp.
